Description

This painting depicts a scene from ancient Egyptian mythology in which Anubis, the Jackal-headed god, weights the heart of the deceased to determine whether they are allowed to enter the afterlife. If their heart outweighs the Ostrich feather, they are fed to the mythological creature Ammit, the soul-eater. In the background of the painting are the Ibis-headed god Toth, who oversees the process of weighing the heart, and Ra, the solar deity. There are many beautiful Egyptian renditions of this scene (e.g., amatterofmind.org/index_files/…, and this is my reinterpretation it. The Egyptian Book of the Dead is an original source for this mythology which is still very interesting to read (an English translation is available here: www.sacred-texts.com/egy/ebod/.
